Hard times

With the recent snow, things became hectic on the bird feeders in the garden , most popular are the sunflower hearts – so far this winter i’ve managed to get through almost 3 – 25kg bags !
Fat balls are the next most attractive food , mostly attracting the Tits , Woodpeckers and Nuthatches, but when the Woodpecker starts on them they get pretty well obliterated.
but i suppose the stuff on the floor then gets eaten by the other birds like Blackbirds Thrushes Pigeons and Jays.
We get a group of Long Tailed Tits come in to feed at around the same time every day – about 3-00 pm , i suppose they’re feeding up before roosting for the night , at one point last week we had nearly Twenty of them when two groups came in, they didn’t get on !

I drilled holes in the dead branch and stuffed Suet into them , its mostly used by woodpeckers and the Longtails. Last year i continued some feeding late into the spring , this female Woodpecker turned up regularly with Two young.

Willow Tit ?

On a brief visit to the RSPB Reserve at Gwenffrwd – Dinas near Llyne Brianne Dam the other day i spotted these, i think they’re Willow Tits ? i have no idea how you tell these from a Marsh tit .
However the day was really dull and these were the best of a bad bunch , i’ll have another trip up there soon , hopefully with better weather.

Playing with Video

Over the holidays , with the weather overcast , i was playing around with the video on my camera , using the remote function on the Canon software supplied with the camera.
i set the camera up on a short ground spike and connected it to a laptop with a 15 mtr Usb cable. I had put out some peanuts and before long the Squirrel turned up followed by a Jay with a large appetite.

i was using a wide angle lens with the camera about 400mm away from the subject , i missed one shot of a jay looking at its reflection in the lens. The clip was shot in HD but i don’t think Blogger will handle the file size , so this is compressed quite a bit , it looks great in HD on the Tele though !!!

Peanut Power

With the start of some cold weather over the past few days , the feeders have attracted more bids than usual. Among them a lot of Jays have been busy filling their crops with peanuts and burying them in the nearby fields.
These photo”s were taken at Parc Cwm Darran near Deri , the feeders attract large numbers of birds including Bull finches, Nuthatches and Woodpeckers.
Hope none of them have a nut allergy !!

Kingfishers again !

Well as they say ” Practice makes perfect ” so as the rain had stopped for a breather , before the next onslaught , i nipped out for another go at the Kingfishers.
When the suns on them its difficult to know how much to compensate for the exposure , i now check every couple of shots after previously spending a few wasted hours taking under or over exposed shots.
