Ham Wall

untitled shoot-010 Ham Wall RSPB reserve is somewhere i’ve wanted to go for some time and never have , so recently i went along to have a look in the day before going over later in the year very early in the morning. The idea being , i would at least have a rough idea of the layout of the place.

On the way there i managed to go the wrong way along some of the smaller lanes running across the levels and was amazed at the way the recent flooding has affected the roads making them into a fairground ride in some places, the evidence of scraped sumps on the humps in the road still fresh.

i stayed until evening to watch the Starlings and about 4-30 they started coming in huge waves but joining forces behind some woods , so there was no view of them all together. but what i had seen of them coming in was quite impressive.

It was fairly quiet Bird wise but i did manage to see a Harrier hunting over the reed beds for 10 minutes then it sailed away and was lost in the reeds and trees.

Bank Vole at Christmas

Last week i decided the Bank vole feeder needed a bit of Christmas cheer !! so using one of the ribbon bows off a present i put a bit of christmas decoration on the ” Vole hole ” they seemed to appreciate it as now two turn up regularly for some sunflower seeds , we’ll be taking the decoration down New years day to avoid bad luck !

Stonechat and Caterpillar

While out enjoying the cold sunny weather in the last few days , i was watching this Stonechat deciding how to tackle a hairy caterpillar, it kept picking it up and then dropping it , eventually flying off with it to eat it . with the cold weather making life difficult – every edible morsel counts.

I phone Camera

Sometimes when i’m out i think ” why didn’t i bring the camera ” not really considering the Phone in my pocket ! Regarding it as ” not a proper camera ! so as an experiment i tried it out on Sunday. these are straight off the Phone.

Kingfishers at Fforest Farm

As the weather was so good , i nipped down the motorway to Fforest farm .as it happened the resident kingfisher was in a co-operative mood and as soon as i arrived it landed on one of the perches close to the hide. however the light at that time was poor and only later as the sun rose a little higher did i get some better light on the subject.
