Kites in the Valleys

For some time now Kites have been moving steadily south from their main area in Mid Wales, first moving over the Breacon Beacons , then slowly moving down the wooded valleys with occasional sightings just south of the heads of the valleys road.
Now it seems it won’t be long before their seen flying over Newport and Cardiff.

Tawny Owl chicks

While out the other day i had the feeling i was being watched. i was looking around the surrounding trees when i saw an eye wink at me from a crack in the nearest tree . Moving slightly to one side i could plainly see  two young owls studying me from their nest. they still had a lot of down on them and will be in the nest for a few weeks yet ,

Hopefully i might get some better images, in the future, as they develop. some fine weather would be nice as well !

Nest Building

Over the last week or so i’ve been keeping an eye open for nest building birds, these Long Tailed Tits were building one in a bramble bush with only a few leaves starting to bud –
this made watching them fairly easy.
Made from sheep’s wool , Lichens, moss and spiders webs, it was fascinating seeing how they put it all together , From a deep cup shape they build it up and every now and then they would go inside and stretch the nest to enlarge it. Finally pulling the top over and making the entrance.
